Breeding for the Future
|
In August 1998, The Rockn "G”
Farm was formed by Bob & Eileen Griner, located in Southwest Georgia eight miles
outside of Thomasville. We have almost five acres, therefore are limited to how
big we can be.
Bob decided he wanted to have
some of those red-headed/white body goats he had seen at the Moultrie Sunbelt
Exposition in Moultrie, Georgia. For several years he would go and talk with the
Boer people that were there about the Boers. They suggested going with a
Full-blood Boer buck and Spanish or percentage Boer does and built from there.
The summer on ’98, he
purchased eight Texas Spanish Does and we were in the goat business. He
borrowed a neighbors Boer buck to breed the does. I told him, "That was his
hobby I didn’t want anything to with them." HA HA! You goatees out there know
that wouldn’t last. When those first kids started hitting the ground that all it
took. I was hooked.
I guess it was a good thing
we started out that way, because we had a lot to learn about raising goats,
along with our veterinarians. We lost a few and had lots of problems learning
what to do with these goats. Worming, trimming hooves, taking care of kids,
housing, feeding, etc. I would much rather learn all these things on $50 goats
than $500 goats.
Our goal at that time, was to
keep our does to raise and breed and sell all our bucks for meat. We had some
ethnic groups in our area so the meat part was no problem. Our does wasn’t a
problem either but we just couldn’t keep enough because people were trying to
get started in raising goats and kept coming to buy does. In 1999, we sold our
whole doe kid crop to other people and all the bucks for meat. Why is it
everyone wants to buy the ones you want to keep?
Our meat buyers found another
source for meat at a cheaper price and stop coming on a regular basis, just
occasionally when the other person had none. So we started to look at what we
were doing and about the same time the Sunbelt Goat Producers Co-op was starting
to make some noise in Georgia. We did some investigation and decided that was
where we needed to take our meat operation. Knowing we could sell our bucks when
we needed to and not have to wait on someone to come to the farm to buy them.
Spending extra money feeding and taking care of them, with the Co-op we could
take them at the time we weaned from the does, without any adding expense except
for the gas to travel to the slaughter facility.
About this time we started to
look at our operation and decided we wanted to change the way we were heading.
Our grandkids were getting interested in the goats and we started taking them to
shows. Now the whole family is interested in showing, so we had to change the
way we were headed to include some show quality stock along with our breeding
stock and to increase our percentages and include more full-bloods.
Our goal now and for the
future, at this time, is continue with our high percentage stock and add some
full-bloods and work with our bloodlines to produce excellent show- quality and
breed stock Boers. Get our county’s children involved with the 4-H.
Goat raising and showing. Educate
people in the area on the meat of the future for the USA.
Anytime you are in Southwest
Ga., stop by and see us, look at our goats and talk goats for awhile. We would
love to visit with anyone interested in the Boer goats. Give us a call before
you come, we both have to work a full-time jobs to take care of our babies.
